The Lord’s Prayer. What a simply beautiful and beautifully simple prayer. I’ve been studying it these last couple of days, allowing myself to sink deeper and deeper into the power of its every word strung together like fine jewels. As I’ve lost myself to its beauty, I have found myself that much closer to the very Father we pray to.
For the next series of entries, I want to open up the treasure that is this little prayer, and deposit my humble words of awe and tribute. My hope is that you may join me to just sit, soak and soar together, and knit our hearts closer and closer to our most wonderful Gardener.
Oh Father, our Father! How immensely loving, and tender and great You are! How you provider, how you gently guide and tenderly heal, how you tend and comfort and fiercely guard and patiently teach! Oh Father! You are King of all there was and is and will ever be! We are so dear to you – you love us soooo much! You cheer us on, you comfort us, you keep us close! You are this close to us! Our deep cries out to your deep Father! Oh Papa! How I ache and burst for your extraordinary beauty and majesty! How carefully and wonderfully you keep and compassionately restore my heart and soul and mind, and affectionately re-pair my spirit to yours! Oh Father, you are all we need!
How wonderful! How magnificent! You are in every layer of the heavens: I breathe your Presence in and out! You surround me as I move about this day you’ve created! Your breathtaking and graceful celestial body and realm gently envelopes and touches our own in this very space and time, and in all time and every space and realm. What great mystery! My mind barely begins to grasp it! Truly, you are the greatest Name above all names!
Oh Papa! There is none a more utterly ravishing and great and Beautiful Name! You are in every iota of glory that is Creation, your finely planned and shaped Creation – Your Heart and Character and artistry is exposed with such joy, such lavish Love – and for all to see! Your glorious Heart is found in the minutia and great, and in everything in between! We hear it in the Opus of the bird’s pip and peep and flap of wing. We see it laced into the sparkling of imagination and amplified in the inspiration of artistry. We breathe it in the fragrance and behold it in the reach of the majestic tree, and touch it in the cool of the humble blade of grass. Your Loving attention is knit into the regalness of the snow-capped mountain peak, and your tender detail in the delicate corner of the snowflake. Your glory is fused in the purity of each dewy drop of rain, and splashed across the sky in the stunning starry vastnesses we have yet to discover. It’s woven seamlessly into the loveliness and detail of each spirit within all humankind – and our spirit connects with yours!
Oh my Father – what a devoted Father you are! You are the most Holiest of all holies! Truly, Papa: we give you all worship and honor and all our devotion and loyalty! Just to say your Name – oh! there is none more blessed, more cherished, more divine, more exquisite!
Let your Name be kept sacred in all our thoughts and actions today; let its treasure be reflected in all our behaviours and loved more than any other name! Let it be held in the highest of highest regard among your vast and most magnificently remarkable Creation!
“This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'”
(Matthew 6: 9-13, New International Version)
